What Is Gematria?

Gematria assigns a number to each letter of an alphabet, so every word has a numeric value. The practice began with Hebrew and Greek scholars, who used it to find links between words and texts.

How to Calculate English Gematria

Give every letter its value under the chosen cipher and add the values together. In English Ordinal, A is 1 and Z is 26, so the word GOD is 7 + 15 + 4 = 26.

Which Cipher Should You Use?

English Ordinal is the simplest and the best starting point. Reduction shrinks each letter to a single digit. Reverse Ordinal counts the alphabet backwards, and the Jewish cipher uses larger values modelled on Hebrew numbering.
